The Business Chinese Test (BCT) is to assess a test taker's ability in using the Chinese language to communicate for business matters and to conduct business activities.
BCT is divided into two separate tests: one for listening and reading and the other for speaking and writing. One can register and take either one or both of the two tests. Each of the following test subjects--listening, reading, speaking and writing--will be given a score (between 0 and 500). Depending on the scores obtained by a test taker, his/her test results will be rated at one of the following five BCT levels:
- BCT Level I - Insufficient ability communicating in Chinese for business purposes (score 0-99);
- BCT Level II - Minimal ability communicating in Chinese for business purposes (score 100-199);
- BCT Level III - Satisfactory ability communicating in Chinese for business purposes (score 200-299);
- BCT Level IV - Good ability communicating in Chinese for business purposes (score 300-399);
- BCT Level V - Excellent ability communicating in Chinese for business purposes (score 400-500).
BCT score levels can be used as a language ability requirement by employers (governments, corporations, universities and colleges) and as an indicator for language ability by employees. It can also be used as a reference for universities and colleges to exempt students from participation in relevant business Chinese language courses. Such tests suit those with elementary or higher levels of Chinese language proficiency.
