Q: What is New HSK ?
A: The new Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) or the Chinese Proficiency Test is a standard examination for evaluating the proficiency of one’s modern Chinese language. The new HSK is designed specially for those people-including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students from ethic Chinese whose first language is not Chinese.
Q: How long has New HSK Been in Existence? ?
A: The old HSK test was first offered in 1990, since then many test centers have been established in China and in nearly twenty foreign countries. For the year 2010, a new HSK has been developed, and will be holding several time a year.
Q: Is New HSK in Simplified or Original Chinese?
A: Both simplified and original Chinese versions of new HSK tests are available to test takers. Please specify your preference when filling out your registration form.
Q: Who Issue the New HSK Certificates?
A: All new HSK certificates are issued by the National Office For Teaching Chinese As a Foreign Language, PRC (also known as Hanban), which is under the Ministry of Education of China.
Q: How Useful Are New HSK Certificates?
A: Your new HSK certificate(s) can serve the following purposes:
- To certify that you have obtained the required Chinese proficiency to enter a college or university in China as an undergraduate or graduate student;
- To certify that you have obtained the required Chinese proficiency and thus, you may be exempted from taking certain Chinese language course in your institution (if your institution agrees to grant you the permission).
- To win scholarships to study in China.
- To test your Chinese proficiency if you are learning the language.
Q: Will My New HSK Certificate Expire?
A: Your new HSK certificate is like a "Diploma"; once you receive it, it becomes your property and it is valid permanently. However, if you wish to use your HSK scores to apply for admission to a college and/or university in China, your scores are good for two years only (for the date you take the test).
Q: How Many Categories and Levels Are There?
A: The new HSK test is dividend into two independent parts: a written test and an oral test.

Q: What is the New HSK scholarship?
The Chinese HSK Authorities have established the HSK Winner Scholarship to financially aid outstanding test-takers to study Chinese language, culture, history and philosophy at a Chinese university. Scholarship recipients enjoy free tuition, free accommodation and free textbooks. However, international-traveling expenses and traveling-insurance remain responsibility of the award recipient.
Qualifications of an HSK Winner Scholarship applicant are as follows:
1) non-Chinese citizen;
2) native language not being Chinese;
c) age below 45;
4) having earned HSK certificate.
Every year, Hanban will grant each test center a certain number of HSK Winner Scholarship based on the number of test takers and their achievement. Test takers that qualify for the Scholarship will need to apply for it following procedures and regulations set out by Hanban, but NOT all of applicants can be approved, Hanban has the final decision right.

Q: Where Can I Take The New HSK?

Q: When Will the New HSK Tests Be Offered at BCIT?
A: For the year 2010, the new HSK test will be offered in May and November.
Q: Which Category’s Test Will Be Offered at BCIT?
A: Confucius Institute at BCIT will offer the all the written and oral tests for the new HSK.
Q: Who Will Grade My Test??
A: After the test, your answer sheets will be sealed and taken back to Beijing immediately to be graded by the new HSK headquarters. BCIT New HSK Testing Center will not be responsible for grading any examinations.
Q: How Soon Can I Know My Scores?
A: You can check your scores on line after 3 weeks of the test date, and the copy of the scores will be mailed out within 60 days after the date of the test.
Q: How Can I Get My Score Report and Certificate?
A: The score Report will be mailed out to Confucius Institute at BCIT around 60 days of the test date, if your score achieve the minimum required, than a new HSK Certificate will be mailed with the score report.
You can pick up the score report and the certificate personally, for your benefit, we won’t give your score report and certificate to a third party, unless you authorize us to do so. Your certificate will be kept in BCIT Chinese Language Test Center for 60 days after the first schedule pick up date ONLY.
Q: Can I Re-take a Same Category Test?
A: Yes, in case you fail, you can take the same category test again. There is no waiting period, nor limit of how many times you are allowed to take the test. All you need to do is to apply again, and be better prepared next time.

Q: How Can I Prepare for the New HSK?
A: The New HSK is a general language examination, it is not based on any particular textbook or subject, thus you may use any textbooks you prefer to prepare for the test.
Sample tests are available at HERE. Some private education agencies, however, offer courses helping you know more about the test, you may register those courses at your own cost.
Q: What Should I Bring When Taking the New HSK Test?
A: On the date of the test, all applicants should bring the Test Admission Card, a picture ID, 2B pencils, and an eraser. When taking the test, you should have nothing on your desk except the Test Admission Card, photo ID, test booklet, answer sheet, pencils, and erasers. You are not allowed to use any tape-recorders, cameras, dictionaries, textbooks, and/or papers.
Q: What If I Am Late for the Test?
A: It is your responsibility to come to the testing room on time. If the test taker is late for less then 5 minutes, he/she may immediately enter the test room to take the exam. If the test taker is late for 5-35 minutes, he/she may take the exam when the next part of the exam begins, and no extension shall be given to make up for the lost time. If the test taker is late for more than 35 minutes, his/ her qualification of taking the exam will be cancelled.
